February 1 - March 1, 2014

Blackwater Regional Library will partner with the Library of Virginia to host the annual Winter Reading Program, "Snuggle with a Book." The program runs 4 weeks, beginning February 1st (I Love to Read Month) and ends March 1st (in celebration of both Dr. Seuss's birthday and National Read Across America Day). It is designed for children from birth through Grade 1, and gives libraries an opportunity to showcase the important role they can play as facilitators of early literacy development for families and caregivers with infants and preschool-aged children.

The Winter Reading Program has a twofold purpose: To instill a love of reading in young children by encouraging shared interactions with books and to educate parents and caregivers on the ways they can advance their children's early literacy development.

Public libraries are uniquely and strategically positioned to play a major role in making sure that children from all walks of life enter school with the necessary skills to achieve academically. Children's librarians have access to children, along with their parents and/or caregivers, during the first crucial years of a child's life. Story times provide the perfect opporunity for librarians to teach parents/caregivers about the skill-building activities that most benefit their child, and to model them in a fun, accessible way that empowers parents to continue these activities at home.

You can register for the Winter Reading Program at your local branch beginning January 27th. The Carrollton, Courtland, and Smithfield branches will be hosting kickoff programs - view their pages or the calendar for more information.
